Shoulder Bows T-Shirt Refashion with a Gather

I bought an extra man’s green t-shirt for St. Patrick’s Day, but it was a little too bright. I think the color is more appropriate for the hazy, happy days of summer! So here’s another ten minute refashion, making a shoulder bows t-shirt. This gives a little feminine ruffle detail on the shoulder. This gather-sewing trick can be used in all sorts of different refashions, such as on the sleeves or on the sides to create a little bit of extra detail. I always use plain t-shirt in order to show off the refashions, but this would look just as nice with a printed t-shirt, maybe even more so.

Materials Needed

The Before

Start by cutting off the sleeves.

And this ugly man’s collar.

Next, cut off the shoulder seam, on both sides.

Turn inside out. Measure about 1/2″ from the cut.

Pin and sew.

Make sure not to sew to the end here, as shown.

Fold the seams outward, so that it lays flat, and sew towards the edge. You are trying to create two “tubes.”

Here is what it will look like, top view.

Cut the edges straight.

And you also want to cut around the collar on the back, so everything is even.

Using the sleeves, cut two pieces of t-shirt string.

I made mine even. 🙂

Stretch them out.

Put a safety pin at the end, and fish through the tubes.

And down the other side.

“Pull” the string, creating a ruffle.

The Final

  1. I find things like this fascinating to read. You make it look so easy I want to go and raid my husbands old T shirt draw just to try it out! I love the ruffled sleeves, they make it so feminine. I think I’d need to add some darts int he t shirt too or ruffle the bottom I find mens t shirts too wide and baggy. Thank you for a great idea.
