Making fabric bows!! ย Bows are so beautiful. ย This tutorial is part of a series of 10 posts … all about bows! ย I am going toย craft or refashion 10 projects using fabric bows in some way or another. ย After the series is over, I will come back to each post and add all of the tutorials. ย For this bow, you could make it into a hair bow or even just add some flair to a shirt or something. ย My daughter has already requested a bunch of hair bows.
Making Fabric Bows … Bows, Bows, Bows Everywhere!
Contents
Sometime around Christmas of last year, I decided to dedicate myself to weekly blog posts. ย Prior to January, I was scheduling posts whenever I felt like it (rather than on a true schedule). ย Well, it’s been A. Lot. Of. Work. ย It’s really easy to get discouraged, because even with Pinterest, results are very slow.
A few weeks ago, one of my Pins got picked up by a decent-sized Pinner. ย Well, I was ecstatic!! ย I think I literally danced in my kitchen. [The corresponding web site is How to Paint Furniture Like a Pro, a post I created a few years ago.] ย So I know that at least I created one blog post that people find useful. ย Or maybe my image was nice. ๐
If you are a fellow blogger like me, I invite you to read along with my journey. ย I will be blogging a bit about the success of my blog in the middle of my DIY refashion and sewing tutorials. ย Along the way, I hope to inspire someone else to keep on blogging, too! ย Drop me a comment, because I’d love to hear about your struggles. ย Maybe we can help each otherย grow our blogs.
At the end, I hope to make my first web site traffic and income report. ย I’m crossing my fingers that I make, at the very least, what I spent this year. ย That’s not too tall of an order, because I don’t spend too much on the blog.
How to Make a Fabric Bows the No Sew Method
Materials needed:
A square of fabric. ย I used a solid color and a patterned fabric fat quarters. You can also use some precut squares
or leftover fabric from another project. Whatever your needs!
We start with a square of fabric. ย Here, you can see that I “attempted” to make a quilting square from some leftover scraps. ย But I couldn’t quite get my corners to match up … that’s okay. ย You won’t be able to tell once the bow is done.
Turn the square around. ย You can easily see the center, but that doesn’t matter even if you don’t have a “center” marked.
Add some glue to two corners that are together. ย In other words, don’t put glue on opposite corners. ย You need the two connect corners to know where the center is (even though my fabric square has one).
Here I am putting one corner down …
All four corners down.
I made a separate quilted center, but if you don’t have one, you can just use a strip of fabric. ย It should be a rectangle.
Fold into a third.
And a third again.
I added a dot of glue to keep it together. ย Can you see it? ๐
Scrunch up the bow accordion-style, starting from the top.
Here it is.
Take the rectangular strip of fabric and wrap it around the bow at the center.
Cut one side, adding a dot of glue to keep it in place. ย You might want to hold it there for a few seconds.
Cut the other side of the center fabric, adding glue to secure into place.
This will bunch up the corners.
I sewed the corners shut. ย You don’t have to sew them shut … just use a dot of glue, andย use a paper clip to hold it in place.

June this bow is adorable
These are really cute full bows. They would look adorable on a headband because they are so full and retro looking. Very cute.

๐ I still don’t know how to make the bow by looking at the pictures. Any videos ? I’m been trying for two days now.
I’m sorry, but I do not have any videos at this time. Thank you for the great suggestion! I may try to implement some videos in the future. In the meantime, can I help you with a particular step? Maybe I could offer some extra explanation or photos.
I still don’t know how the squares come together in step one. I might need your explanation and more photos. I guess I understand better when I see video.. ๐คจ
I agree! Step one is talking a square but the picture shows the squares already put together somehow??? Iโve no idea what a quilters square is? Definitely need clearer instructions…
Thank you! I have sewn for years and I think these instructions aren’t at all clear. I’d love to see a video too.
What size square should we use?
